Mediaset & Fincons: DVB-I Evolution with HbbTV

read time

Strategic leap in hybrid TV: learn how DVB-I and HbbTV open up monetization, scalability, and a future-proof distribution model.

The challenge

Mediaset, a key European broadcaster, recognized the importance of the emerging DVB-I standard for the future of television distribution, as it allows a unified and seamless viewing experience across both broadcast and IP-delivered content.

To prepare for the market adoption of DVB-I and improve its services, Mediaset faced several challenges: delivering a consistent UX across hybrid environment (DVB-T, DVB-S, DVB-I), combining DVB-I and HbbTV to improve the interface, enabling new monetization such as targeted ads, testing DVB-I specs, and ensuring efficient video delivery over IP.

Pioneering new TV standards with a hybrid UX, targeted ads, mABR, and unified DRM. Discover how innovation met scalability and viewer experience.

The solution

To tackle these challenges, Mediaset partnered with Fincons drawing on their long-standing collaboration and Fincons’ expertise in DVB and HbbTV technologies. Together, they adopted a dual-track strategy, starting with a Proof of Concept (PoC) followed by a Market Trial.

Key activities carried out during the project included using HbbTV technology to enhance the range and quality of services for viewers. The team also implemented a unified DRM system to enable broader and more flexible content distribution across different platforms and delivery methods.

To ensure high-quality and reliable video delivery over IP network, CDN performance was monitored using CMCD. Furthermore, the project tested mABR technology to improve streaming scalability and efficiency, and implemented Targeted Advertisement in a DVB-I context, leveraging well defined standards such as DVB-TA Part 3, DVB-DASH, and HbbTV, to which the terminal must be compliant.

The benefits

The collaboration between Mediaset and Fincons on DVB-I with HbbTV delivered several key benefits:

  • Prepared the market for DVB-I adoption;
  • Enhanced user experience by merging broadcast and IP content;
  • Laid the groundwork for innovative services;
  • Contributed to the evolution of media standards;
  • Enabled hybrid service delivery across DVB-T/S and DVBDASH, aligning with the evolution of HbbTV 2.0.4 and DVB-I;
